Mao Tse Tung created a plan called The Great Leap Forward in order to make China a powerful economy. The Great Leap Forward was designed to be a five year plan to improve farming and industry in China. In order to put his plan into action, Mao banned all family farming and individual land ownership. The country was divided into communes where families lived and worked. These communes provided necessities such as entertainment, health care, and schools. With this new plan, it looked as if production was at an all-time high. However, the results of Mao's Great Leap Forward proved to be his greatest failure.
Results of The Great Leap Forward
The Great Leap Forward turned out to be disastrous to China and its economy. Over 20 million people died from famine and disease. Farm production decreased significantly and food production was halted due to China's drastically changing weather with floods and droughts. The use of coal was not properly managed and railroads suffered due to this misuse. Mao realized that his five year plan was a failure and blamed himself and his party members. The results of Mao's plan indirectly lead to the Cultural Revolution.
